Shopify SEO

Shopify handles the technical basics automatically. What it does not handle is collection page content, product schema, duplicate URL resolution and the strategic keyword targeting that drives eCommerce organic revenue. We do that work inside your Shopify store at the Liquid template level.

Collection Pages Drive Buying Intent

Shopify stores that invest in collection page content and product schema consistently outperform stores relying on product pages alone. Collection pages match commercial intent queries like "buy wireless headphones Australia" that product pages cannot rank for. The chart reflects a typical 12-month organic growth trajectory for Shopify stores receiving our SEO services.

70% of eCommerce Traffic Starts With a Google Search — Not on Your Shopify Store

Shopify handles the technical foundation — fast hosting, automatic SSL, CDN delivery — but it does not rank your store. The elements that drive organic revenue require deliberate work: collection pages need keyword-targeted content, products need complete schema markup, duplicate URL issues need correct canonical tags, and app bloat needs to be audited for speed impact. Most Shopify stores leave all of this undone.

Collection pages are the most valuable SEO asset on any eCommerce platform. They capture the high-volume commercial searches that bring purchase-intent shoppers to your store. A Shopify store with 40 collection pages and zero unique content on any of them is invisible for every category search in your market. These are the searches — 'women's running shoes Australia', 'buy kitchen knives online' — that drive eCommerce revenue at scale.

Unlike Google Ads or Meta campaigns, SEO compounds over time. Rankings built through content and technical work continue producing traffic without ongoing ad spend. For most Shopify stores, the long-term organic cost-per-acquisition is 3–6x lower than paid channels once category rankings are established.

Most Shopify stores waste their SEO potential

Shopify provides a fast, secure hosting environment with automatic sitemaps, SSL and CDN. Store owners assume this means SEO is handled. It is not. Shopify gives you a foundation but the elements that actually drive organic revenue are not automated: collection page content, product schema, internal linking, duplicate URL resolution and image optimisation at scale.

Collection pages are the equivalent of category pages on any eCommerce platform. They capture high-volume commercial searches that product pages cannot target. A Shopify store with 40 collections and zero unique content on those pages is invisible to Google for the exact search queries that drive purchases.

Shopify creates a duplicate URL for every product accessed through a different collection path. Without correct canonical tag configuration, Google indexes multiple versions of the same product, diluting ranking signals across URLs that compete with each other instead of with your competitors.

Duplicate product URLs

Every product accessed through a different collection path generates a separate URL. /collections/mens/products/jacket and /products/jacket are both indexable unless canonicals are correctly configured. We audit all canonical chains and fix every instance where the wrong URL is treated as primary.

Empty collection pages

Shopify collection pages default to a product grid with no supporting content. Google treats these as thin pages with low topical relevance for commercial keywords. We write unique, keyword-targeted collection descriptions that match buying intent and improve both rankings and conversion rates.

App script bloat

The average Shopify store has 12 to 15 installed apps, many injecting JavaScript on every page load. Each script competes for browser resources, increasing LCP and INP scores. We audit every installed app, measure real performance impact, and recommend removal of apps that degrade Core Web Vitals.

Missing product schema

Many Shopify themes do not output Product, Offer, AggregateRating or Review schema correctly. Without this structured data, your products miss out on star ratings, pricing and availability information in Google search results. We implement JSON-LD schema in Liquid templates.

Every component of Shopify SEO, handled in-house

Shopify SEO requires platform-specific knowledge at the Liquid template, theme and app level. Generic SEO checklists miss Shopify's unique URL behaviour, canonical tag quirks and script management requirements.

Technical Shopify Audit

Full crawl of every product, collection, page and blog URL using Screaming Frog. We audit canonical tag configuration across all collection-product path combinations, XML sitemap accuracy, robots.txt settings (including Shopify Plus Liquid edits), and Core Web Vitals via lab and CrUX field data.

  • Screaming Frog crawl of all URL types
  • Canonical tag audit for collection path duplicates
  • XML sitemap accuracy verification
  • Robots.txt review (Plus: Liquid-level edits)
  • Core Web Vitals baseline and field data
  • Redirect chain and 404 error cleanup

Collection Page Optimisation

Collection pages are where organic eCommerce revenue lives on Shopify. We write unique, keyword-targeted content for every major collection that matches commercial buying intent. Each collection gets a mapped H1, title tag, meta description and internal link structure.

  • Keyword research per collection page
  • 500+ word collection content with buying intent
  • H1, title tag and meta description per collection
  • Internal linking from blog to collection pages
  • FAQ content blocks for high-traffic collections
  • Collection-level conversion optimisation

Product Schema and Rich Snippets

Product, Offer, AggregateRating and Review schema implemented via JSON-LD in Liquid templates. Star ratings, pricing and availability appear in search results, lifting click-through rates by 15 to 30 percent for products with review data.

  • Product schema for all product types
  • Offer schema with price, currency and availability
  • AggregateRating and Review schema setup
  • BreadcrumbList schema matching navigation
  • Rich Results Test validation per product type
  • Search Console structured data monitoring

App Speed Audit and Core Web Vitals

Shopify stores frequently fail Core Web Vitals due to app script bloat. The average store we audit has 12 to 15 installed apps, many loading JavaScript on every page. We identify the specific apps degrading LCP, CLS and INP scores, and recommend removal, replacement or script deferral strategies.

  • Per-app JavaScript impact measurement
  • LCP, CLS and INP audit and optimisation
  • Image compression and lazy loading setup
  • Third-party script deferral configuration
  • Theme code review for render-blocking assets
  • CDN and Fastly caching verification

Content Strategy and Link Building

Buying guides, product comparisons and collection support blog posts published through Shopify's blog CMS. Each piece passes authority to commercial collection pages via internal links. Link acquisition targets Australian publications with genuine traffic and domain authority.

  • Topic cluster content supporting collections
  • Product comparison and buying guide creation
  • Australian editorial link outreach
  • Competitor backlink gap analysis via Ahrefs
  • Blog-to-collection internal linking
  • Link velocity monitoring and reporting

Liquid Template and Theme Optimisation

Direct Liquid template edits for structured data injection, canonical tag corrections, breadcrumb navigation, Open Graph tags and meta tag configuration. For Shopify Plus stores, we also handle checkout.liquid SEO, robots.txt customisation and multi-region hreflang tags.

  • JSON-LD schema injection via Liquid snippets
  • Canonical tag correction in product.liquid
  • Breadcrumb navigation for collection hierarchy
  • Open Graph and Twitter Card meta tag setup
  • Shopify Plus robots.txt via Liquid template
  • Hreflang tags for Shopify Markets regions

Homewares and Gifts - 450 Products on Shopify

Gift Retailer: Collection SEO Fix

Store had 28 collections with nothing but product grids. No collection descriptions, no keyword-targeted H1s, and product schema was broken because their Dawn theme override removed the default JSON-LD output. Fifteen installed apps were adding 800KB of JavaScript per page load.

We wrote unique collection content for all 28 collections, fixed the Liquid template schema output, removed 8 unnecessary apps, compressed all product images, and built a content strategy targeting gift-related buying keywords with blog posts linking to collections.

Sporting goods retailer targeting national category keywords

Shopify Plus store with 60 collections and 1,200 products. Canonical tags were incorrectly pointing collection-path product URLs to the /products/ version for only 40 percent of products. Product schema was outputting the wrong price for multi-variant items. Blog had 120 posts with no internal linking to collections.

We fixed canonical configuration in product.liquid, rebuilt product schema to output correct variant pricing, wrote collection content for 45 priority collections, added internal links from all 120 blog posts to relevant collections, and built 40 new backlinks from Australian sports publications over six months.

Shopify offers the least technical control but compensates with speed, reliability and lower maintenance overhead. For stores that invest in proper Shopify SEO services, the platform limitations are manageable and the speed advantage is significant.

Shopify SEO adapted to your industry

Shopify powers over 30,000 active Australian online stores across every retail vertical. The SEO fundamentals are consistent but keyword strategy, collection taxonomy, product schema requirements and competitive landscapes differ between a fashion brand competing with The Iconic and a pet supplies store competing with Pet Circle.

Before starting any Shopify SEO campaign, we audit your collection competitive landscape using Ahrefs, identify keyword gaps at the collection level, analyse competitor schema implementations, and build a strategy specific to your vertical and target audience.

Shopify Liquid Template Optimisation

Most SEO agencies treat Shopify stores identically to WordPress or custom-built sites. Shopify has platform-specific technical behaviour that generic audits miss: collection-path duplicate URLs, theme-dependent schema output, app script accumulation, and Liquid template limitations that require specialised knowledge to work around.

We work inside Shopify at the Liquid template, theme code and app configuration level. When we identify a technical issue in your Shopify store, we fix it in the codebase. Not just flag it in a spreadsheet and hand it to your developer.

AI Is Now Part of How Shoppers Discover Products Before They Search

AI Overviews now appear for a significant share of product and category searches in Google. When a shopper searches 'best running shoes under $200' or asks ChatGPT for product recommendations in your category, AI systems synthesise answers from stores with strong Product schema, authoritative collection page content, and recognised brand signals. Shopify stores that appear in AI-generated product answers receive brand exposure before the user ever visits a product page.

For eCommerce, AI citation visibility is a growing source of top-of-funnel traffic that doesn't show in Search Console but influences brand awareness and eventual direct searches. We optimise for both traditional rankings and AI product discovery as part of every Shopify SEO campaign.

AI Overviews for Product & Category Searches

Queries like 'best yoga mats Australia', 'affordable office chairs online' and 'running shoes for flat feet' trigger AI Overviews in Google. Shopify stores with substantive collection page content and complete Product schema are cited in these generated answers — generating product impressions at the top of the results page before any organic listing.

ChatGPT & AI Assistant Product Recommendations

When shoppers ask AI assistants 'where can I buy [product] in Australia', recommendations draw from stores with strong brand mentions, authoritative content, and trusted review signals. Building topical authority through collection page content and earning brand mentions across trusted sites increases your Shopify store's AI recommendation visibility.

Product & Offer Schema for Rich Results

Complete Product schema with price, availability, and brand signals enables Google Shopping rich snippets and AI product panel appearances. Offer schema with accurate inventory data ensures your products are eligible for both AI Overviews and Shopping tabs. We implement and maintain Product schema across your full catalogue at the Liquid template level.

What Shopify store owners say about their SEO results

Our collection pages had zero content. After the rebuild we went from invisible to page one for our top 12 category terms in 10 weeks. Organic revenue doubled in the first quarter. The collection page work was the unlock we'd been missing for two years.

Mia T.

Founder, Homewares & Lifestyle Shopify StoreMelbourne VIC

The product schema and canonical fix alone improved our rankings noticeably. We were cannibalising our own products with duplicate URLs and didn't know it. Technical fixes, app audit, and collection content — organic traffic up 320% in five months.

Chris N.

eCommerce Manager, Sports & Outdoor Shopify StoreBrisbane QLD

We moved from WooCommerce to Shopify Plus and needed an SEO partner who understood Liquid. The hreflang setup for our AU/NZ markets was done properly in week one. International organic revenue is now 28% of total — it wasn't measurable before.
