The Problem
Powerful Infrastructure, Poor SEO Defaults
PrestaShop is an underrated eCommerce platform with genuine SEO strengths: multi-language architecture, flexible URL structure, module extensibility and full server control. But default installations are SEO-hostile. Unfriendly URLs with numeric IDs, missing redirects, no product schema, duplicate filter pages and thin category content.
The result is an eCommerce store where Google cannot efficiently discover, crawl or understand your products and categories. Competitors on Shopify with half the product range are outranking you because their platform handles SEO basics by default.
PrestaShop SEO requires platform-specific knowledge: .htaccess configuration, Smarty template editing, module conflict resolution and database-level URL management. Generic eCommerce SEO audits cannot identify or fix PrestaShop-specific issues.
Unfriendly URL structure by default
Default PrestaShop URLs include numeric product and category IDs: /12-category-name.html or /45-product-name.html. These patterns waste keyword real estate, look unprofessional in search results and create redirect complexity when products are reorganised. Friendly URLs must be explicitly configured via the back office and .htaccess rewrite rules.
Duplicate content from filters and sorting
PrestaShop faceted search generates unique URLs for every filter combination and sorting option. A store with colour, size and price filters across 50 categories can generate tens of thousands of near-duplicate pages. Without canonical tag configuration and robots.txt rules, Google spends crawl budget on filter pages instead of your actual products.
Missing product structured data
Default PrestaShop templates do not include comprehensive Product schema markup. Product pages are missing price, availability, review aggregate, brand and SKU structured data that Google uses for Rich Results in search. Without Rich Results, your product listings compete at a disadvantage against competitors with star ratings and price information in search results.
No content beyond product listings
PrestaShop stores rarely have editorial content: no buying guides, no specification comparisons, no blog, no FAQ pages. Without informational content, you have no mechanism to capture top-of-funnel search traffic, build topical authority in your niche, or create internal linking pathways that strengthen category and product page rankings.

Campaign Results
PrestaShop SEO results from Australian stores
Gourmet Store: 1,200 Product Recovery
PrestaShop 1.7 store selling imported gourmet foods with 1,200 products across 85 categories. URLs contained numeric IDs. Faceted search for cuisine type, origin country and dietary requirements was generating 28,000 filter URLs. Category pages had no content. Product schema was missing. LCP was 4.8 seconds on mobile.
We configured friendly URLs, set up 301 redirects for 1,200 old URLs, canonicalised filter pages, wrote category content for 85 categories, implemented product schema with dietary and origin structured data, optimised server caching, and built links from food publication sites and Melbourne directory listings.
Homewares Brand: AU and NZ Stores
PrestaShop 8 store with separate English AU and English NZ language versions sharing a catalogue of 650 products. hreflang was not configured. Both language versions had identical category content. Canonical tags pointed to the AU version for all pages, suppressing NZ rankings. No blog or editorial content on either version.
We configured hreflang between AU and NZ versions, fixed self-referencing canonical tags per language, wrote unique category content per market (NZ-specific product recommendations and shipping information), launched a blog with market-specific content, and built links from both Australian and New Zealand publications.

PrestaShop-specific implementation, not generic audits
Most SEO agencies have never worked inside PrestaShop. They run a generic crawl, produce a spreadsheet of issues, and leave your team to figure out how to implement fixes in a platform they do not understand. That approach wastes time and money.
We work inside PrestaShop: back office configuration, .htaccess rules, Smarty template modifications, module management and server-level optimisation. When we identify an issue, we fix it in the platform.
